Orwell presents a place where the government is dictatorial and watches over every little thing you do and wants to control everything each citizen does. Two people in love despise the government and join a group, the Brotherhood against the government trusting in who they thought was a part of the brotherhood they are sent to admit to their crimes. The man is faced with his fear of rats and is placed with them but finally he cant take it and tells the government to give the rats to "his love". In the end he comes out as someone who appreciates the government and has no feelings for his former love.
